Education is the key to YOU being able to decide!

(Do not depend on a breeder to answer this question)

Definitions to help you:

(a) PUPPY MILL BREEDER: CAN YOU IDENTIFY A "PUPPYMILL"?

We have seen the photos! We have heard the horror stories and RAIDS of puppymills!  They are out there!

A puppymill has too many dogs! The momma dogs may be overbred, parents may have questionable health, and adults have minimal training/stimulation and human interaction!

(b) BACKYARD BREEDER: WHAT IS A BACKYARD BREEDER?

Does it mean the dog is chained in the backyard? NO!

A backyard breeder is an irresponsible breeder. IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDER more accurately describes this breeder because it doesn't mean a NUMBER of dogs or anything about A BACKYARD!

Irresponsible breeders may not have breeding rights (proper registrations?). They may not do health testing (questionable health?). These breeders may breed poor quality (pure-bred standards?) or mixed breed dogs. These breeders may not have a registered kennel nor offer guarantees.

(c) RESPONSIBLE BREEDER:  WHAT IS A GOOD DOG BREEDER CALLED?

A responsible breeder:

(1) Health testing. Did the breeder check the health of the parents?

(2) Training/interaction. Is the breeder interacting with their dogs (and other dog lovers) in some way other than puppy production? Obedience classes, conformation, shows, agility, etc.

These TWO things! What a difference!

Of course, RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS do much more than two things!

But hopefully these 2 simple questions (along with the infomation above) will help you make better decisions and distinguish: a puppymill, a backyard breeder, vs. a responsible breeder

...and HELP you to make a more informed decision!

HELPFUL QUESTIONS

  1. How many breeding dogs does the breeder have? (different breeds?)

  2. Are the health tests on the website? (if any testing done?)

  3. Can the breeder tell you about the personality of the mom? of the dad? (can they talk at length about their dogs?)

  4. What "things" does the breeder DO with the dogs outside of the home? (agility, obedience, conformation, anything?)

  5. Breed standard. Look at the adult dogs, do they look funny? The dogs (adults and puppies) should conform to the breed standard. Not all show quality, but if someone is SERIOUS about the breed, then they should care about the breed standard for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

    • Over-bred mommas will produce poor quality puppies

    • Over-bred mommas will produce puppies with more health issues

    • A Breeding RULE: Skip every 3rd heat cycle. That is MAX 3 litters in 2 years (24 month).
